Frequently asked questions

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a permanent method of reducing or removing unwanted hair. During laser hair removal, light is directed at the pigment in the hair follicles to stop them from producing new hair.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal works by directing energy in the form of intense light toward the pigment in the hair follicles of the treatment area. The hair follicles absorb the light energy which ultimately destroys the hair follicle, halting hair growth.

How Do I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?

Before your laser hair removal treatment, your physician will review your medical history and determine whether you are a good candidate for the available laser technology. Before your laser hair removal treatment, you should avoid:

  • Tanning

  • Waxing

  • Chemical peels

  • Applying perfume, deodorant, or other potential irritants to the treatment area

What Should I Expect with Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal treatments may begin by applying a topical anesthetic to the area. During the treatment, you may feel a transient sensation similar to a rubber band snapping your skin as the laser is directed to the skin. Laser hair removal sessions can take anywhere from ten minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area. The treatment plan, including the number of treatment sessions, will depend on hair and skin color, skin type, body location, and other factors. Typically laser hair removal sessions will be spaced between 3 and 6 weeks apart depending on the same factors listed above.

What Should I Expect After Laser Hair Removal?

After laser hair removal, you will likely see tiny pink swollen bumps in the treatment area that usually dissipate in a matter of minutes to hours. Your physician will advise you to avoid direct sun exposure for at least a week in the treatment areas.
